Divine Alignment
This morning, I had the joy of helping out at my son’s school library, where under the guidance of Mr. M, I learned the art of quick cataloging. While we were chatting, my eyes caught a Chinese calligraphy piece on the wall, which led us into a casual conversation. What unfolded was truly a blessing: Mr. M graciously offered to sponsor a Calligraphy Club at the school! Not only that, but he offered the library as a weekly gathering space for the kids.
All it will take from me is a lunch break each week to ignite the spark of calligraphy in the hearts of children eager to learn. For those who have been dreaming of starting a calligraphy club but struggled to find a teacher sponsor, this is their answered prayer! It’s a living reflection of Romans 8:28: “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God.” This moment reminded me of how everything falls into place in divine timing.

The Gentle Grace of Life
While writing a new piece as a gift to a mother-to-be, a person who is quite special in my life, the memories flashback to 2017. That year, life shifted in a way I could never have anticipated. My younger son was just 4 years old, my older one navigating the tumultuous waters of high school, while I juggled the unrelenting pace of a startup job that demanded constant travel and sleepless nights. Then came the diagnosis—breast cancer. In an instant, time seemed to slow, and the once-frenzied details of life, work, and routine obligations faded into the background. Everything took on a new weight, a deeper significance. It was a path I hadn’t chosen, one filled with uncertainty and challenge. Yet, I wasn’t walking it alone. By my side was not only family and friends’ enormous support, but also the medical team and there was Lisa, a nurse practitioner whose presence felt like a beacon of light. She was more than a healer; she was a companion on this sacred journey, guiding me with compassion and wisdom through each step of the unknown.
Lisa was more than just a medical professional. She was a source of unwavering support in the battle. Single at the time, Lisa approached life with a blend of gentleness and curiosity. She not only helped craft my treatment plan but was also genuinely invested in my well-being, emotionally and spiritually. Every visit to the clinic felt like meeting with an old friend. We talked about everything—treatment, sure, but also life, nature, and alternative therapies like Chinese herbs, meditation, and even cupping. Her interest in the holistic side of health resonated with me profoundly.
For four long years, Lisa remained a steady presence as I underwent radiation, surgery, and rounds of chemotherapy. Then came 2021—a year that brought another hiccup when a slow-growing malignant cell was found under my left armpit. Another 30 radiation treatments, and two years of oral chemotherapy began, and Lisa was there, just as gentle, just as kind. I never felt alone in those moments, as Lisa cared for my spirit as much as my physical health.
Time passed, and now, seven years after that initial diagnosis, life feels different but fuller. Lisa is no longer the single nurse who sat beside me during appointments; she is now a mother-to-be. As her first baby arrives this October, I am overwhelmed with emotion. She has been there for me in ways I can never repay, and now, as I see her stepping into motherhood, I can’t help but reflect on the quiet, unstoppable force that is life itself.
Just as nature renews with each spring, as flowers blossom with the subtle touch of the breeze, life continues with grace and strength, carrying us through. Lisa’s presence in my life, her transition into motherhood, and my own journey through cancer are a testament to how humanity is rooted in the enduring bond between people. We grow, heal, and live on—interconnected, nurtured by kindness, and forever touched by the beauty of new beginnings.
In honor of Lisa, I felt compelled to write something special, a gesture of my deepest gratitude for the role she played in my life. Therefore, I decided to revisit a poem I once composed for a friend who wanted to gift a mother-to-be. This time, the words felt even more meaningful, as they now resonate with the new life Lisa herself is about to welcome.
The lines "春风应侯到吾家,唤起庭院三两花" translate to:
"The baby girl's arrival is like a spring breeze, responding to the call, entering my home, and awakening a few blossoms in the courtyard."
This verse beautifully captures the gentle arrival of a baby girl, symbolized by the spring breeze. Just as the breeze stirs life in the garden, so does the birth of a child bring fresh hope and joy into the home. It evokes a peaceful and harmonious connection between nature, new beginnings, and the essence of life itself.
The sentiment behind these lines reflects the quiet strength of compassion, much like Lisa’s presence throughout my journey. Life, much like nature, preserves our hope, unhurried yet genuinely rooted. As Lisa steps into her new role as a mother, this poem feels like a fitting tribute to the way she nurtures life—both in her work and now in her own family.
A Bespoken Piece
A couple of days ago, I was honored to receive a custom calligraphy piece request from one of my students. She sought to bestow upon her longtime friend a gift of significance, a token of appreciation for their enduring bond. In her tender words, she painted a portrait of her friend—a luminous tapestry woven with threads of intelligence, beauty, and success, all set against the backdrop of a harmonious marriage, where love flows freely from her adoring husband.
With a heart full of sincerity, she entrusted me with a quest: to unearth an ancient verse, a melody of friendship and goodwill, to adorn her gift with sentiments. Through the corridors of history and the whispers of antiquity, I embarked on a journey of seeking the perfect words to encapsulate their cherished friendship.
And then, amidst the gentle rustle of parchment and the soft sighs of ancient tomes, I stumbled upon it—a gem of poetic brilliance, radiant with the warmth of spring and the promise of endless renewal. "岁岁春无事,相逢总玉颜"— "Year after year, springs pass without incident; whenever we meet, your countenance is always like jade." It conveys the idea of enduring friendship and the beauty of a friend's presence. It’s like a whispered echo of friendship's embrace, a tribute to the unbreakable bond between kindred spirits.
Ah, the journey of customization has just begun. Next, I'll carefully select the finest rice paper, the perfect size and type of writing brush. The most challenging part lies in arranging and positioning each Chinese character in a manner that truly brings out the beauty of this ancient poem. Despite several attempts last night, I couldn't quite achieve the satisfaction I sought. Yet, undeterred, I persisted through the next day until every stroke reached the flawless perfection envisioned in my mind's eye. This process, you see, is the essence of my craft. Each calligraphy piece is a labor of love, a symphony of precision and deep focus. And in the end, as I gaze upon the final beauty, I can't help but feel a sense of pride—a testament to the joy found in every moment of creation.
With a smile upon my lips and a sense of quiet satisfaction in my heart, I knew that this exquisite verse would find its rightful place in the heart of my student's gift, a beacon of light to guide her friend through the seasons of life with grace, beauty, and unwavering friendship.
It's alive and kicking!
It all begins with an idea.
Let me regale you with the tale of my weekend: Picture me, lounging in front of my laptop, typing away with the grace of a caffeinated sloth, pondering life's mysteries and occasionally pausing to scratch my noggin in perplexity. Oh, and let's not forget the debugging saga that consumed most of my waking hours. It was like trying to unravel a particularly stubborn knot in a ball of yarn—you know the feeling?
Now, let's talk sleep—or lack thereof. I caught a grand total of four hours of shut-eye until the ungodly hour of 5 am, only to repeat the process like a broken record. But hey, who needs sleep when there are dreams to chase, am I right?
But here's the kicker: amidst the chaos, I finally managed to wrangle something that's been tap-dancing on the fringes of my mind for what feels like eons. Cue the confetti and the victory dance!
